Radiation and Pregnancy

Hello,
I am an x-ray tech and I recently just found out I am pregnant. I was in some cases a few weeks ago with high dose fluoro radiation. I did not know at that time I was pregnant I did wear a lead body shield. Will this affect my unborn child? What should I do about my job? Is it safe to do my job and be in the fluoro as long as I shield my abdomen? Please advise.

This is a common question for female workers in your field. It's been found that you can conduct a fluoroscopic procedure as long as you are wearing a lead apron. You may also want to wear a personal radiation monitor on your belly to assure that the levels getting through are not harmful. Also remember that the reading will be higher than the actual radiation to the fetus as it will have to pass through many centimeters of tissue as well!

Congratulations!!
