Cortisone shots in the spine

Why do they put cortisone shots in the spinal cord for pain? Is it dangerous and can it make the pain worse? Can it do damage to my spinal cord? Can I have trouble later on from it?
I was in a wreck a little over a year ago and have had pain in my left shoulder, arm, neck, back, and leg. My left hand and foot go numb at times.

The steroid shots are used as an anti-inflammatory medication. These shots are usually done by people who know how to do them, so the danger is lessened. Steroids can and do have side effects, such as causing calcium loss in the surrounding bone; they are an immune suppresser as well. Most practitioners will limit the number to about three a year. The effects of these shots often wear off, it they work at all in the first place.
