There is a law called the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act that gives the debtor rights. Here is a good article so you know if they over step their bounds:

COLLECTION AGENCY HARRASSMENT
I have a collection agency calling me at work, threatening to garnish wages, expecting me to call him daily to settle a credit card debt which I have offered to work out in monthly payments. However, the collector refuses to agree and demands the entire amount paid in full, with more threats of seizing property, etc. He is now calling me 4 times a day. What can I do to get him off my back? Is there anything I can do to deal with the credit card company to settle the debt?
