Why were the copyright laws extended to the artist life plus 70 years?

It is all about profits and earning the maximum amount that someone can off a recording.

because in 70 years after someones death, no one really will care that much about people.

I'm sure artists like Elvis will find away around this and keep the copywrites forever.
