Cortisone shots in the spine

Why do they put cortisone shots in the spinal cord for pain? Is it dangerous and can it make the pain worse? Can it do damage to my spinal cord? Can I have trouble later on from it?
I was in a wreck a little over a year ago and have had pain in my left shoulder, arm, neck, back, and leg. My left hand and foot go numb at times.
