Can I be held responsible for infringement?

If you purchase something represented by the seller as personal designs, but come to find out after receiving them they were copyrighted, can I be held responsible for infringement?

You can not be found guilty of infringement or copyright violation, but a court could confiscate the items from you because they are essentially "stolen property." That could happen if the original creator of the works went to court to recover damages. Then you would either have to pay the original creator of the work to keep it or sue the person who sold you the copyrighted work in order to recover your money.
