Is it true that it is hard to tell the difference between the 780p and 1080p formats of HD

I wouldn't say a waste of money. 720p is the lowest level that can be considered HDTV. There are differences, and they may be noticeable to some people on higher end tv's.

considering blueray and ps3 and all the high end stuff is all geared at 1080i and 1080p, I'd considered it a good buy instead of just getting a 720p tv.
