Help! It's my mother-in-law!

I am wondering how to handle a negative talker. She is my mother-in-law! It seems like every conversation holds biting comments about the people she interacts with, sometimes people I don't even know. She'll say it over and over again too. It seems as if she always has to put them down to make herself look better, smarter, etc. Kind of like an "I told you so attitude". I tried to nip it last night when I was on the phone with her, she started saying something about her other daughter-in-laws mother, and I interjected that she had already told me that...but she just had to continue with her story, she just had to get it out! AGAIN!!!(must have been the 4th time I've heard it) It is hard to have a relationship with her when I have a hard time just being around her. I would love to improve the relationship for my husbands sake.

In a nice way you could tell your mother inlaw that you feel uncomforiable when she talks negative about others. Then quickly change the subject to something pleasant, she may be a little taken back but then she will quickly response to what your talking about. I did this with my mother inlaw. About a week later she thanked me saying she was not aware how negative she had been talking of others. She has been very carefull now as to waht she says.
