Job was canceled after offer

On 3 December I was offered a position by recruiter. On 5 December I went to their Tampa office and meet with the recruiter and filled out the necessary paper work. We agree to a hourly rate of $40.00 per hour and a start date of 2 January 2008. Per the agreement, I submitted a sample to drug test on 7 December and passed.

I gave notice to my employer and left that job on 21 December. During this same time I have been turning down interviews with other recruiters and potential employers since I believed I had secured a job.

On 27 December 2007 I decided to check in with the recruiter prior to my starting on 2 January and he informed me that the start date was pushed back to 14 January 2008. On 9 January I received a call from recruiter saying the job was put on hold.

Now I have no job or pay check and am back on the job market. Can I get some type of compensation for lost income, time etc.?
