How long is the EX Spouse legally bound to pay Alimony in California?

My son has been told by his Ex that he needs to pay her alimony until she re-marries or dies. Is this correct according to California law? They were married for 14 years before she asked for a divorce on the grounds she didn't love him anymore. He want's to get the alimony reduced as the company he worked for went bankrupt and his income has been suddenly reduced to a quarter of what he made when the divorce took place. He has heard this definition of the time alimony is required by the State of California is much less.
Sincerely,
June Link

Well how she ever got alimony is beyond me. I have heard of some women getting alimony if they were married for a long period of time and had never worked and had know skills but even then the judge usally only allows it for a short period of time until the ex spouce can go to school and get a training for a job, usally a year and sometimes less. I would not listen to my ex but I would file a motion to modifly the orignal order and not only get it lowered but try to get it stopped completely. Something sounds strange on this one because know one deserves to have to pay alimony until the death of an ex spouce. I hope this is an over sight on the courts part for your sake. also you need to report that the company you worked for went bankrupt and even if you were to get a job that does not mean you will make the same wages.
