Can a common law spouse receive social security benefits

My common law spouse recently died. We were planning on adopting a child. I would like to know if I adopted a child would I be able to collect his social security benefits for that child

There is know way you can adopt a child and collect your common law husbands social securitly. Even had you both adopted before he passed away the child could not collect on his social securtily. In fact if you can it would be a suprize to me. I do not know how social securitly feels about common law marriages you would have to contact them and ask them. I do know that you have to of been married at least ten years to even be able to collect social security benifits from your spouce at retirement age.
