If the nail has also become more brittle and thinner, it could be what is called egg shell nails and has several causes: vitamin deficiency, or past illnesses. When the body is deprived of what is vital the hair and nails are usually the first to suffer. Talk to her doctor to see what he recommends for extra vitamin supplements. If this is the problem don't stress it isn't permanent.
