Could be you done some thing to the oil gauge senser, it may be unhooked , or you might have bent the senser, or the gauge might just be bad, do you have oil movement now, like under the cover visible oil flow, if there is it might just be what you think , i dont think it would have made it 3 miles if you had no oil flow, and when a new oil pump is installed it takes a bit for it to pump up the oil, i think you are on the right track,

Replaced the rear meain seal and oil pump on 88 dodge ram
I replaced a rear main seal and oil pump om my 88 dodge ram and when finiished, after the oil was added, the truck was tappint after I started it and there was no visible oil flow in the valve cover. The oil pressure guage showed no oil pressure and the red oil light was on. We drove the truck about 3 miles and it quit tapping but the oil pressure light showed no pressure. The indicator needle did not move at all and the red light stayed on.Could the pressure guage be bad, or if not why would there be no oil pressure. The engine quit tapping and ran smooth after driving it. Thanks
