Car title

I have bought a 1998 Ford Contour from a privite owner for 500.00 dollars with the transmission that had to be replaced. I have replaced the transmission for over 1600.00. I have had the car for well over 6 or 7 months and the guy I have purchased the car from for some reason does not want to produce the title. He frist said he filed for a lost title. But now he won't even answer my call or answer my messages. I don't think the car was stolen because I was pulled over by the police for a out of date tag. And the local tag agent tell me the title has to be found and will not give me any infromation why. I have spent all my savings for this car and it is the only transportion that I have. Am I out of luck or is there anything I can do without spenging a lot more money?

Small claims court would be one option. You may also want to contact your local District Attorneys office and find out whether or not this warrents fraud charges. Good Luck, and Lesson learned, no title, no cash.
