Before you consider doing this I would first think about what would happen if one of you become ill and cannot take care of him. It sounds like a fulltime job. If you are willing to take on the job or helping with money, why not consider a nurse that is qualified to be with mentally ill children. There are organizations that can also help. This may be a very big strain on all and especially for the child. There are many organizations out there that provides the help to teach, take care of and help the parents with this issue. My cousin was mentally ill and received a lot of help from organizations for the mentally retarded. He know creates art out of rocks, paints them and sells them. His sisters are always around when he needs them and they look in on him regularly.

Grandparents filing for full custoday
My grandson is mentally disabled. My daughter has had sole custody since birth. Dad puts on a show, but never showed for any hearings. My daughter is exhausted, and cannot take care of him with the needs he has, she has been raising him alone, with alot of help from us, and has been considering placement in an institution to ease her stress. My husband and I don't want to have this happen, as we want to exhaust any options before taking any step like that, and want to be granted full custody of our grandson, and our jobs are willing to work around his special needs so he is able to get the attention necessary that he requires. Our daughter feels as well that this is the step to take and has agreed to granting us custody. What forms do we start with? We live in Madison Co. NYS, our grandson currently reside with his mom, but we want to take chare of his care beginning the first week of June. He is only five years old.
