Do I need to hire a lawyer to get visitation since my ex is keeping her away from me?

I have not seen my daughter who is almost 6,in 4 years because my ex(child's mother) wont let me.Apparently she tells her that her stepdad is "daddy" and doesnt give her the cards or gifts I send.My name is on the birth certificate, so do I still need to file Legitimization or hire an expensive lawyer to be able to see her again?I was paying child support up until last year, but stopped.Isnt child support and visitation separate? And why couldnt I see my daughter even when I was paying ch.supp.?My ex and I were never married so we never went to court to settle custody.any advice?thanks!

If your ex has never filed for custody of your child then she does not legally have custody though the court and so there would be know visitaions ordered or court ordered child suppot. What you need to do is file for joint custody, your ex will be served and have to appear in court and at that time visitation and child support will be ordered all though the court. She cannot keep you from having visitaions but you will have to go though the court to get them.
