It doesnt it just helps you prove to the person your turning your work into that you didnt Plagiarize. the most it could help you do is keep your work organized.

It's meant to guide a reader to your original sources, in case they want to check them, or find out more. I've also found reference lists tremendously helpful when I'm doing research, because once I've finished reading one article, the author's reference list points me toward others that I can look up until I find my own direction. It's like a primitive world wide web!
Also, citing references in-text keeps writers honest about where their ideas come from, which helps you avoid plagiarism.

Citing works and providing list of references at the end of your paper, informs your reader that you consulted experts on the subject and authoritative sources to build your case. By documenting your sources, it helps you avoid plagiarism - that is stealing someone else's ideas and listing them as your own.
