It's meant to guide a reader to your original sources, in case they want to check them, or find out more. I've also found reference lists tremendously helpful when I'm doing research, because once I've finished reading one article, the author's reference list points me toward others that I can look up until I find my own direction. It's like a primitive world wide web!
Also, citing references in-text keeps writers honest about where their ideas come from, which helps you avoid plagiarism.
Citing works and providing list of references at the end of your paper, informs your reader that you consulted experts on the subject and authoritative sources to build your case. By documenting your sources, it helps you avoid plagiarism - that is stealing someone else's ideas and listing them as your own.
"Work cited" serves several functions; it allows the resder to observe the scope of the research or to see in a particular works has been used.
