Temple rubbing

My husband was in the air force during the vietnam war and spent time in Cambodia as a special ops soldier from 1970-1973. Because of the work he did there he was given a temple rubbing (from a buddhist temple in Phnom Penh) by the U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, and a pair of Thai palace guard swords.

The rubbing is about three feet long and he picture is of a man standing on top of a large bird and he is poised with a bow and arrow and beneath the bird, are a group of men poised with arrows and staffs.

this is the most unusual piece of artwork I've ever seen. Michael believes that there are only two of these rubbings in the U.S., his and his Captain's. The ambassador gave this rubbing to Mike because he knew that Mike and the Captain flew by military aircraft and the plane would not be searched and they could get these rubbings out of the country.

Mike has always wanted more information about this rubbing so i thought I'd ask you if you knew someone who might translate the message of the rubbing.

If it's cambodian(Khmer), then look for some one in the universities, or the local cambodian culture (many imigrants) to translate. Canada, the western part, has a large imigrant population from this area, so if you have a hard time finding a university with these contacts, ask there. Professors are usually really into these kinds of things, and in the summer, have nothing better to do--they need a break from their writing/research anyway..

if it's vietnamese, the first option is avaliable if the lettering looks 'western'... if it looks chinese, and is vietnamese... it is next to impossible to get some one who knows how to read it. so, academics and monks themselvs are the options there.

or it could simply be chinese. same options as if it were cambodian.

so, ask around at some language programs, if they have anyone interested or able to read these things--send pictures if they're interested, not the document itself--and saying you have this could be a dangerous thing itself--try not to advertize too much, or say where you live, of how they can get it, etc... there are laws against these kids of things, so, CAREFUL, with your treasure hunt :D

and it is a treasure..

enjoy!
