On some cars when you run them completly out of gas and continue to try to start them you can burn out the electric fuel pump or blow the fuel pump fuse , check the fuse box for blow fuses
and replace all blow fuses , then take the gas cap off and put you ear down next to the fill spout and have you girl friend turn on the key and you listen for a humming / buzzing noise coming from the gas tank for a few seconds the humming / buzzing noise wont last but a few seconds if the pump is working it will shut its self off, if you dont hear anything you probably have burnt it out and it will have to be replaced , if you hear the humm / buzz , try to start it , maybe it was just a blow fuse .
