1995 chev 2.2 wouldn't start

Using it as a grandsons hornet dirt track race car.Lost power around last corner but started running again.Got home went to back it off the trailer.It started but killed.Sounded like it was running out of gas.Changed the fuel filter,was full of water.Can hear the fuel pump run to build up pressure.Wouldn't start.What should I ck first?jerry

Beginner (16)

You need 3 things for an engine to fire...fuel, air, spark. make sure you are getting all those every where up to the end and then go from there.
