The lamp for the gear shift indicator, automatic, center console, is not working. How do you access the bulb after removing the outer bezel? There seems to be an inner plate with the shift positions. Assume the bulb is under this.

Don't know how to access the bulb. It's beneath the shift indicator.

after you have removed the trim from around the shifter you will find a plactic cover with 2 clips on each side ,place the shifter in nuteral, use a small screw drive to pop these clips loose so the cover with slide up the shifter as far as possible , still not giving you much room to work, you will find the bulb there, it's very small and delicate you might be able to get it out with your fingers if you have small hands and fingers , i use a pair of crooked nose needle nose pliers , be very carful not to break it or you will have a real problem getting it out
Good luck
