1996 Taurus transission

I have a 1996 Taurus . When Idling it will not go into gear until I get the revs up to 1800- 2000 rpm. I heard this may be a speed sensor.
Might you agree and is it an expensive repair?

the 1st thing i would check is trans fuild pumping though the transmission , this also sounds like the torque converter might be bad, the way to check this is take a transmission line off , and see if fuild comes out , at idle , then increase your RPM and if it comes out at 1800 or 2000 , then this is the problem , at idle it should come out good, and your vent pipe on top of the transmission may be stopped up , or the lines, and the filter may be stopped up , if its the speed sensor then its behind the manifold theres a little thing on the transmission thats got wires hooked to it, and you can use a 10 mm socket, to take this off after taking off thew wires, it will come out easy , and costs 20 dollars at advance or auto world, if you do it yourself
