1998 jeep grand cherokee question

My parents jeep is awd and when they turn tight it sounds as it the transmission is about to drop out of it? Should the rear wheels be positive as when you turn that is what it is doing? It sounds as if it is stuck in full time 4 wheel drive? Something doesn't seem right?
