1998 park ave fuel gauge

My fuel gauge swings from full to empty when it gets to half a tank, when i turn it swings to full or empty and stays for awhile then it finds the correct level. this leaves a uncomfortable feeling as to the level of fuel is left. i understand it is the fuel sensor in the tank. could i change it? or just how difficult is ti.

This is hard to fix . but if you are good at tools and have time to take the tank down. and put in a fuel pump and all then do it. id put in a new fuel pump while i had it down . and check every thing.
