2000 Chevy Malibu running hot

I just bought a 2000 Chevy Malibu that had a bad motor. I replaced the motor and now I think it is running hot. The temp gauge half way works occasionally and the cooling fans never come on. I have checked the temp sending unit, fuses, relays and made sure the fans work. At a lost as to what to check next. Have you run into a problem like this before? Could it be the computer or instrument panel?
