Are you talking about the iat sensor , Functionally, this temperature-probe sensor helps the computer regulate exhaust-gas recirculation based on incoming-air temp. The sensor is either located in the air-cleaner housing or air duct. Removing the IAT/MAT sensor is usually straightforward

It was the iat sensor. Can this happen if the gas cap is loose?

Thanks for your help. I was in error as to what it's called. Does this make the engine light come on if the gas cap is loose?
