Call your auto store for the fireing order but the rotor botton usually always points to number one cylinder. The order is usually on the intake manafold.=The order follows the same on the cap.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 you bring the number 1 cylinder to top dead center(bring it all the way to the top) on the compresson stroke then remove cap to see where the rotot is pointing

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 true bring the piston to top dead center but stop just before you get to the very top. then sit the distributor into the hole. u want the button to point in the general direction of the number one piston. any local parts store will have the firing order start from number one then go ask what the rotation is most arecounter clockwise go that direction from number one and place each wire on the cap in the firing order at top of info.

I know this is an old thread, but I have to post this.

Unless this is a boat, or an oldsmobile 307, the rotor on a 350 spins CLOCKWISE.

The firing order is indeed 18436572, and if the distributor is set properly, number one should be at about 5 o'clock looking into the motor compartment from the bumper.

Also, the # 1 is in a different place depending on if it is a points or a HEI.

To get started get your distrutor cap[new one] look on the top you will see a #1that's where you begin you must know if if rotates clockwise or counter clockwise start in that direction then follow the firing order and cylinder line up.

Starting with a motor that has no distributor in it, Experienced persons can do this easily, Others could make it a lifetime effort.
On Chevy V-8 and most other GM V-8 motors,
Cylinders are numbered, Drivers side head front to back 1-3-5-7
Passengers side 2-4-6-8
The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
The distributor turns clockwise,
Each piston comes to top 2 times per turn of distributor, The best way to place a distributor is with the ROTOR pointing in the general direction of 'no. 1' cylinder, then adding the remaining wires in order of the firing order ending with 'no 2' cylinder.
If the motor spits and pops and fires into the carb then it's likely that the distributor is 180 degrees out of time,
In this case remove dist. cap, put no.1 cylinder on top dead center with rotot pointing away from no.1
then lift the distributor and rotate the shaft to point the rotor toward no.1 again.
Then, Rewire the motor again.
Start motor and set timing.

Very old thread, waste of time, but here is the consolidated version.

Thanks Jamie, maybe it will get read.

I forgot to mention other than that Olds motor, marine motor distributors often turn LEFT.
