Transmission Problem

Toyota 4-Runner: When cold (below 50 degrees outside temp) car goes in reverse fine but seems to try to start in 3rd gear when shift selector is put in "D" or "2". If put in "L" car behaves properly. After less than a minute of shifting manually normal function returns to "D" and the car runs fine the rest of the day. Problem usually re-occurs the following morning it it is chilly or cold outside.

Is your check engine light on? if so do you have any transmission codes? it sounds like you may have a transmission fluid temperature sensor issue. it is also possible to have sticky valves in the valve body in the transmission, when the fluid gets hot it thins out so it would allow for better lubrication through whatever part is causing your problem. Take it to your local mechanic , or transmission shop and have them check it out.

No MIL light and no codes set. Do not even get a "temporary" code when the problem is happening. Have had it in the shop several times to no avail. It does seem to be EXTREMELY temperature dependant as literally less than a minute of run time (or higher ambient temps >55 or 60 degrees) "corrects" the problem. I had the transmission flushed about a week ago and, so far, that does not appear to have helped. Might a detergent additive or additional flushing help? Could it be a sticking shift solenoid?

You could try Lucas' brand of transmission additive.

I have 130,000 miles on the Subaru, and swear by it.
