Why are my gears grinding?

I have a 2003 Cheve K1500 and I got it stick. I put it in 4WD and my gears started grinding. I put in back in to 2 WD drive and they still grinded. What is wrong with my truck?

It sounds like the transfer case is huffed. The New Process transfer case has a chain drive on the inside, when the chain gets stretched over time or stress, it starts grinding away.
