Are my gas cans that I use for my Jet Ski's illegal?

I purchased my 5 gallon gas cans in 2000 and was told by a friend that I can no longer use them in California.

Whats wrong with using a can thats 8 years old , as long as its in good shape , and the lid dont leak , thats all that matters, ive never heard this before , so go ahead and use them ,
