Was my jeep being repoed legal?

We bought a 2000 jeep from my sister 2 years ago for $10,000 and have been making monthly payments of $300. We still owe about $3,000. Per a e-mail from my sister she states that the payment is due on the 15th & after the 20th a $25 late fee would be due for every month late. After payment is 30 days late we would have to surrender the vehical. She has excepted in the past a payment being late as long as it was under 30 days late & included the $25 late fee. On may 15th the payment was due & on the 21st which is only 6 days late & way under the 30 that she said she would allow, she paid someone to come on to our property & repo the jeep without any warning. Because of our grace period agreement is this legal.

Read your contract if you have one.
Also the Email, Carefully.
If there is no mention of repossession then she would have to get a court order allowing her to repo the vehicle.
If there is, She would have to allow for the specified time to elaps.
If she has written you an Email stating that there is to be a late fee assessed after a certain time, Then that would be the same as allowing a grace period and she could not repo untill it is obvious that there is no other solution.

I agree with Jamie, she jumped the gun, and will now have to pay the piper if she did not legally notify you of repossession, or there are no terms for repossession in your contract. Especially if the laws in your state require it.

Good luck, and sorry about your sister and her conduct in regard to family.

I found out that she said she has a picture of my spouse driving the jeep who is not on the insurance, would this give her legal right to repo my jeep in california.

I don't know about Ca.
In Arkansas the buyer Ownes the vehicle untill payments are not made or there is another breach of contract.
A financer cannot take a vehicle just because they don't like the way it is being used.
