Usually a horn, and you need to time it's interval with a stopwatch, account for the speed of sound, and use a standard formula to estimate your distance from shore.
A sailboat sounds 1 long blast followed by 2 short blasts every 2 minutes when underway in poor visibility
If all else fails the sound "HELP!" usually works :-)
