Can a salvage yard charge the victim to get her stolen car back?

Daughter reported car stolen, and next day police called, saying her car was found at a salvage yard. The salvage co. had paid $296 to a woman who had sold 4 cars in a few days to them. My daughter's car had obvious damage to steering column. The woman had no papers showing ownership of the car, but the salvage company bought it anyway. Now the company wants my daughter to pay $296 to get her own car back, that they bought as stolen property. Is this legal? Need to know right away. This seems like scan. The salvage co. can go after the thief for restitution, not my innocent daughter.

Yes i agree . the salvage co. should have a title to show owner ship . and i would take this to court . the salvage yard bought a stolen car. and thats a crime. and id take them to court like now. and make them pay it back . a jury will award this to your daughter. and id get a warrent for the owner of the salvage yard also, for buying a stolen car. this needs to be stopped and you are the one to do this. or your daughter is. you have no business paying for some thing they done. and id tell them this also. get er done. hope this helps!iam on your side

Yea, I agree. Take them to court. Maybe if you threaten them that you have a lawyer they may just let her have the car back for fear of being charged with receiving stolen property.
Good luck to you.
