Can our brother in law take away the car he sold to us because we have been late on payments?

We got a notarized vehicle purchase agreement in 2/26/05.

The car was sold for 20,000. We gave 10,000 down.

Made payments 5 payments of 450.00 in 2006.
Several payments (not sure how many) of 450.00 and 300 in 2007 and 1 payment of 250 this year.

The car is under our name but when DMV requested the title of the car to make the name change, out brother in law said he had lost it and made the change filling out paper work DMV gave for both parties to sign. We also have a loan against the car for 5,000.

Last week they asked for the car to be returned to them. Can they take it from us?
