Car having problems shifting from 1st gear to 2nd etc?

This a 1997 mecesdes benz E320 that I am having problems with the gears? Some one told me that it may be the sensor; is this true?

The E320 has an electronic shift module , and this goes bad some times . needing a new one. better have this checked out !. it will make a big old diff , and shift better then new if this is what it is!
