from the top : you might have to take off the air filter for the carb before you can get to it

Can I pull the front motor mount and pull the motor forward for more room to work?

I have often disconnected the master cylinder by removing the (2) mounting nuts and leaving the brake lines connected pulled the whole master cylinder unit forwards of of the brake booster..
This can give you a more room to get your body in position and a better angle of visibility in seeing below the manifold and this takes only takes a minute or so to do.

The view of the distributor from the bottom is not very good one all and you would be lucky to get an arm and hand one hand up in there and be able to see what you are doing at the same time. I find working from the bottom to be very frustrating. It also helps to have a very good light source down in there too and not just a flash light. Sometimes I sneak an extra light in from the left side of the engine the more light the better.
Good Luck!
