Holding pink slip for money owed

A friend lent another friend $500.00 and he gave him his pink slip to his truck to hold until he paid him back. He paid $200.00 back and then he passed away. can he sell the vehicle to get his money back?

If the title was signed over to him he can sell it , if not no he can't , it gose in to probate and the administrator of the estate has the right sign it over or sell it
