How do I know if my Alternator is going out?

Car is killing. Lights coming on, charged the battery, ran a while and killed again.

If you can get a voltage meter, check your charge coming out of your Alternator, should be 13.5 to 14, on the meter

I was told that if you removed the battery post and the car kills then the Alternatop is bad. Is this true? I don't have a voltometer.
