It turns out that in order to remove the gas tank, according to the manual, I must first remove the engine. An alternative to that method is being tried. Disconnecting the front half of the mower from the back half attached in the middle frame area on both sides of the gas tank.
Four bolts on each side of the frame hold the two halves together.
The end result will still be the removal of the gas tank, but without removing the engine. The only complications expected are to loosen some electrical connections and the drive belt from the clutch pulley..., much preferable to removing the engine and then removing the gas tank. It should work.

I didn't have to take the mower apart. I found a bolt facing away from the gas tank that held a bracket in place. This bracket held the microswitch. I was able to get a box wrench around the bolt head and turn it about 3/16 of a complete rotation. It took many turns and re-adjustments of the wrench but I finally got it. The part has been ordered (around $20.00) and soon I'll be mowing in style. Thanks.
