I have a 2001 pontiac grand am with a 2.4l daul over head cam how much free play should be in the timing chain?

The car is running rough like it is out of timing. i checked the timing chain and loos like it has about a 1/2 inch play in it. the cars runs ok while in park but starts to skip an run rough when in revearse and drive. could i be right in my thinking or could something else be wrong. the check engine light is on also.

Thats real loose. and it really makes a noise i bet. put another gear and chain . on this. buy the metal gear. and they will last a longer time!
