Is the solenoid external in the 1996 Taurus wagon transmission?

Mechanic is telling me I need a new transmission (2600 dollars) because the trans won't shift into overdrive. Others are telling me it may be as simple as a transmission fluid flow problem or that a solenoid might be the only thing that's bad.

I have 96 too. Go with mechanic rebuilt it. Mine cost $2000

Unfortunately I have to agree with Bahrain on this one.

The potential damage caused by a failing solenoid in this case is not worth solely changing the solenoid.

You can change the solenoid ,and keep the trans as is, but it will be on borrowed time...
