Laboring engine after oil change

I recently changed the oil on my 98 Grand Prix GT as well as the oil filter. After I started the car up and drove it for a short ways, the engine began laboring quite hard to run, the mileage dropped quite sharply, and the enging puts out a strong odor of burning oil. I checked the level of the oil and everything I'd messed with and it seemed fine. I'm concerned I got the wrong filter. The one I picked up had the same designation as was recommended for my vehicle except for the letter 'p' in front.

P would mean performance so that shouldn't be a factor, however it has been found that kids are switching oil filters in boxes on public store shelves and if this is the case you could be starving your engine for oil. I would stop driving and rechange the oil, and filter with another one, this time checking the number on the filter against the number on the box to make sure there the same

Could you have possibly knocked off the spark plug wires?
