Hello, I have a 1990 cherokee laredo 4x4 and mine fuel pump was hanging in the gas tank, accessed from the front side, though it was not to difficult to change out, I had mine in and out 4 times over the weekend. It is easier if you back it up on ramps, but I also did it just laying under the jeep , main thing I learned? make sure the fuel level is down to about a quarter tank or less before starting (if not it will be) and remove your gas cap first also to reduce any fuel pressure , wear goggles to keep and gas drips out of your eyes also. My pump at Autozone was around $65.oo and comes with a new "O" ring gasket. And also before you start, I dont know all the symptoms you have, but If you do not hear the electric pump make a noise when you firts turn the key before it cranks, check the relay fuse under the dash and also bang kinda hard with a rubber mallet on the bottome of has tank all around where the circlular metal ring is where the 2 rubber hoses are connected, that actually fixed my wifes in her Windstar van. Still dont know what that problem was, a year later and it is still a pumpin! If you do hear the fuel pump make noise when you first turn the key and it just cranks, check also your fuel regulator, a chrome vacuum operated piece mounted on/in the front of the fuel injection rail, and should be under pressure.
Good Luck.
