03 Dodge Neon SXT, should I have the transmission fixed or get rid of the car?

My 03 Dodge Neon is having some serious transmission problems, it locked up completely, tires would not budge nor would it shift. After being shaken off a tow truck bed it started working again but is definantly not safe to drive anywhere. Before it did that it seemed to have a hard time shifting, getting stuck in park and down shifting really hard. I was quoted $1200-$1700 for a rebuild on the trans, but was told by a hobby mechanic that it might not be worth it as the engine has been making a knocking sound for a while and is probably the next thing to go. Its been sitting for a few weeks, I start it up about once a week just to make sure it still works. It also has some weird electrical issues that never got fixed when I took to a shop, it just started up one day and quit blowing fuses. The car has a little over 110K and otherwise drove fine. Should I fix it or buy a used car for the same price?

Me personally, i would cut my loses as they are and invest into a different car, that hopefully is better off. Sounds like you are going to continuosly have issues, and by the sound of it costly issues.

I agree with tony, those cars are throwaway cars. for 12-1700 you could buy something more reliable.

You should never buy a new car just because one part breaks every car can be fixed. you will spend more money buying a new car

Dummy says for 12-1700 you can buy another car.. LOL! well Dodge transmssions are so junk that you can replace one in an afternoon for about $200.. so do whatever you want. I can give instructions if you need them.

Get your transmission fixed. Just be sure to get a warranty just in case it breaks again. If you think the engine still has a lot of power and just your transmission is messed up then replace it. Don't buy a completely new car.

Actually I also have a Dodge Neon with a busted Transmission. I'm thinking about doing it myself I have a neighbor who does transmissions so if I run into any real problems I have backup. Is it easier to replace with a Manual TRans or should I stick with a Automatic ? My wife just paid this car off 6 months ago. I do not want another car payment !
