1996 ford taurus transaxle run in reverse but very slow in drive what wrong?

Is it slipping in drive? not engaging? if the fluid is full check to see if it smells burnt, if so you are in need of a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Your transmission must not be fully engaging in drive. You should take it to at least two auto mechanics to get their opinion.
