Clutch problem with 1998 Ford Ranger

I have a question re: my 1998 Ford Ranger: When I started it up this AM, the pedal would go almost all the way to the floor, but would not easily allow me to take it out of gear. I finally was able to muscle it out of gear, and get it into first gear only after getting the rpms up to a much higher level than normal.

Then, when on the road, it was sometimes very difficult to change gears (sometimes the clutch would work properly, sometimes not). Might this problem be indicative of a need for more fluid, or am I “screwed,” and in need of a new clutch?

Hi... I would check the fluid level and also see if there is air in the system in the clutch master cylinder.

When you first checked the fluid , was it low? if so it may be air , but usually it means its leaking.

you probably dont need a clutch , but you may need a master /slave cylinder assembly

for your truck , they arent cheap, but probably less than a clutch . if its leaking the pedal goes to the

floor , it may bypass internally , and not leak externally (the master cylinder)

hope this answers your question

It Sounds like a hydrualic issue, bad slave or clutch master. it also depends on how long you have been forcing it into gear, If you have high rpms and you are forcing it into gear, you are probably in need of a clutch and hydrualic replacement. pretty common i just did one yesterday.
