Ford 302 carb flooding after distributor/ignition upgrade...

I just bought a 1968 Triumph TR250 (like the TR4) that has been upgraded to a Ford 302 v8

Because of bad rotted wiring, I replaced the coil, ignition box and distributor with a two-wire ProComp 9000 HEI distributor with built-in coil and ignition control module. I hooked up the battery and tach wires and it fired right up as expected and ran smoothly. I then adjusted the vacuum advance and idle. Everything seemed fine... until I drove it.

It died a few minutes after driving and when I raised the hood, there was gasoline everywhere on the manifold. I blew the gas pools off the manifold and cranked it again but it only ran for about 30 seconds. I got it cranked again and then noticed what was happening with the carb.

The overflow valve was spewing gas and after I turned the car off, the back two barrels would completely fill the chambers with gas. Also, the little jet in the center between the front two chambers was constantly squirting a very fine misty plume of gas as well even when the car was off.

Why is the carb flooding after I shut the car off? Why does gas expel out of the overflow valve while running? Is this a pressure buildup that keeps forcing gas into the carb? Is this carb flooding problem related to the ignition system upgrade, or is it just a weird coincidence? Why would the car be running smoothly if there was an ignition problem?

The vehicle was NOT doing this before I upgraded/replaced the ignition system.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Has the car been setting for some time? I suspect you simply have a stuck float or needle and seat or just a piece of dirt or rust under the needle and seat. I can't think of anything to do with the ignition that could have caused this. I would say it is just a coincedance. What carb do you have on this 302? If it is a Holley they are very sensative to dirty fuel. They also have what is called a power valve. If the engine ever back fires the diaphragm in the power valve ruptures and raw fuel runs into the intake and floods the engine. The power valve won't cause fuel to run out of the float bowl vent though which is what I believe you are describing. Only a leaking needle and seat will cause that. You could install a fuel pressure gauge in-;line between the fuel pump and carb to check the fuel pressure. I don't know the spec for the fuel pressure because I'm not sure what carb you have but generally speaking anything over 7 psi is to much for a carbuerated engine. Another thing that comes to mind is how you described the "little jet between the front two chambers was spewing a fine mist of gas". I'm thinking you mean the accelerator pump nozzles. Again depending on what carb you have there may be an adjustment on the linkage for the accerator pump cam. If someone has monkeyed with this it may be causing part of the problem. Good luck. And let me know what you find.

Thank you. It was, in fact, just a dirty needle valve. I took the needle and power valves out and sprayed everything down with carb cleaner. After putting it all back together it is running like a champ. It did sit for a while before I bought it so yes, I must have jarred some dirt loose when I was installing the distro. Thanks again!
