The safest way is to obtain an inexpensive, inline tool which is placed in series between the sparkplug, and the cap/coil.

You can get one at a local parts store, or at Amazon.com.

It is called an inline spark tester.

A spark tester is the most inexpensive way to test for spark. You put it in series between the spark plug wire and a good engine ground, if you have spark you will see spark jump between the opening in the tester. If this test shows you have spark, take the tester and clip it on the top of the spark plug and retest, if no spark is found then you have a faulty spark plug.

You can use a plastic handled screwdriver held next to the head and inserted in the plug boot
or just leave the spark plug in the boot and lay it on the head .

either way you should see s spark while cranking
