My 2003 Mitsubishi Galant hesitates in the morning when I put it in drive?

I have a 2003 Mitsu Galant with 105k miles and a fresh oil change. First thing in the morning when I get in the car, i back out of the driveway, then when I put the car in drive, it hesitates for about 3 seconds and then knocks into drive. I am afraid this is damaging my transmission or something. I have no idea what is causing this. But after that first knock, it drives fine for the rest of the day. It only happens when the car is sitting still for a long time like overnight, and then i start it up. Any idea on what this might be?

You need to check the transmission fluid first , see if its low ,note color and smell to see
if if looks burned, dark fluid indicates old fluid/worn parts.

usually when the transmission slip only when cold , the seals are worn internally , thats why
it works ater it gets warmer , the heat expands the seals.

you can try a transmission additive (stop leak) but i dont recomend it , it softens and expands the
seals , the best answer is to rebuild , which is expensive .

depending on the vechicles condition ect, you might consider driving it till its done and
getting something else

sorry , best of luck

I suspect you are low on trans fluid. You may have developed a small leak. It may be worn internal seals or a weak pump but check the fluid first. Make sure the car is warmed up and check the fluid with it idleing in park.
