MY 2001 chevy malibu's ABS (anti-lock brake system) light keeps coming on.

Then my brakes jam up and I can't stop and I don't understand it. It happens while I'm still driving and also while I'm braking. It's really weird and it scares me because I have my 2 babies with me usually. Are my brakes bad or could it be my fuel pump possibly? I'm not sure and I know nothing about cars! Help please

If your ABS light comes on this just means you have lost the ABS feature and the brakes should act just like a regular brake system that is not equipped with ABS. They really should perform like a regular brakes even though the ABS lght is on.When you say they jam up what do you mean exactly? Do they jam on evrey pedal application or once in a while? Is the pedal height normal? Does the brake pedal sink? Do all wheels lock up? just the front? or rears? do they pull left or right? do you smell anything burning like a burned biscuit odor? any additional descriptions would help.

I'm having this same problem. The jam isn't happening anymore but the orange ABS light comes on all the time and stays on until the car is shut off. The jam was happening on left turns when I would brake. I think it doesn't happen anymore because I subconscious know not to do it. I brake now before I make the left turn. I know this thread is old but hopefully someone is still out there. My car is no longer worth $2000 and I'm not going to pay that to have it fixed. I just dumped $1000 in getting the head gaskets replaced because the car still had the gasket eating dexcool in it. Now I've got to run transmission oil through my engine to try and clean out the dexcool buildup. This car was amazing till it hit 120k, then it started falling apart. GM is lucky they actually have people work for them. If it wasn't for my dad working there I'd be driving an Audi right now. Sorry Dad, but GM doesn't care about it's American customers. American engineers need to stop designing around "THE CHEAP" and start caring about "QUALITY".

I know this is getting old but maybe someone else is having the same problem. GM had a major issue with their ABS brakes. The sensors in the front wheel bearings would get in them and fail. When they did the brakes would fail also. I have had 2 s10 blazers, a Bravada, & 2 s10 pickups that all had wheel bearing/ ABS problems. I feel there should have been a recall, BUT. When replacing these try to get the Timken bearings, They have roller bearings that last longer. The fun part is finding out what side is bad. At about $150 per side you might want to replace both. Brakes are very important.

My 1998 chevy malibu ABS light keep coming on. I got new brakes my rotors are new in i just got a hub bearing put on the front right side off the car where the noise is coming from.Andthe sound isstill coming from the right side, but the mechanic said it could be coming from the hub bearing. I need some advice because i am paying alot of money in this sound is really getting to me. Also i was reading my book and it say my brake system is divided into two parts. The regular brakes and anti lock brakes does this have something to do with the noise
